Bastrop State Park

(512) 321-2101
Directions: Take Hwy 71 east to Bastrop and head north east on 21 for 1 mile.

A sharp contrast to the Hill Country area west of us, the Lost Pines of Bastrop State Park [30 minutes] due east are close enough for every Austin hiker to smell. Environmental circumstances left this isolated region of loblolly pines further west than most in Texas, leaving the East Texas woodlands right next door. Thanks to the shade these massive trees provide, Bastrop is enjoyable year-round. In other words, there's no excuse to miss it.

The park has two main hiking areas: 3.5 miles of interlocking trails inside the Park Road 1 ring and an 8.5 mile loop on the northeast side of that ring. The 3.5 miles of trails in the center of the park are just as scenic as the larger loop, with a few creek beds and easy hills offering fantastic views. Primitive camping is allowed about a half-mile into the larger loop and anywhere thereafter. Bikers are not allowed in either area.

Only leashed dogs are allowed in the park and in electric and tent camping sites. Dogs are not allowed in cabin areas. Guests are required to pick up after their dogs. Public consumption of alcohol is prohibited.
