The Italian Campaign

Bonaparte
Bonaparte
at Arcole

About this painting
In 1796, France was at war with Austria. The French military strategy was to have two armies attack Vienna while Napoleon was sent to commandeer the troops in Italy and keep the Austrians preoccupied. This provided Bonaparte with the opportunity to demonstrate his military brillance. He developed tactics that would cut his enemy's troops in two parts, then he would throw his forces at one side before the other side could regroup. However, the defeat of one army in Vienna and the retreat of the other, caused the French to redirect their attention to Bonaparte's efforts.

Napoleon defeated the Austrians at dozens of cities including Lodi and Arcole. He sent millions in plundered riches to the Directory government in France. Bonaparte realized his importance to the French government. Contrary to the orders of his Parisian superiors, Napoleon crossed the Alps and began his march toward Vienna. The Austrian government quickly signed a truce.
