Defending Tuileries

In 1795, Napoleon was called upon to defend the ruling governmental body as it was attempting to dissolve itself and implement a new constitution. Royalist- supporting mobs attacked the Tuileries palace where the political body was meeting, but Napoleon's cannons and "a whiff of grapeshot" turned the mob away. The new government of the Directory was established. Napoleon was promoted to major general.

His exploits were regaled in Parisian society. He met Josephine Beauharnais, and married her. His fortunes continued to grow and days later he was given command of France's Italian army.
