Battle at Toulon

Although Napoleon was stationed in France, he envisioned a military career in Corsica and spent prolonged leaves there. He was threatened with dismissal on numerous occasions, but the French Revolution created military opportunities for people who were even remotely loyal to the cause. Napoleon realized that his future lay with France, sought out opportunities there, and was promoted to a captain.

The young officer was sent by the government to recapture the naval base at Toulon which had fallen into anti-Revolutionary hands. Napoleon and his troops were able to capture a fort overlooking the base and his artillery division successfully defeated the British fleet. His accomplishments were awarded shortly thereafter when he was promoted to brigadier general.
