The 'Real' Atlantis

Thera.

The site of a prosperous Bronze Age civilization closely linked with Minoan Crete and, some say, the Atlantis described by Plato.

Volcanic action on the island of Thera, 1938-1941. In 1500 BC, the volcanic eruptions caused the island's central portion to sink into the sea, suggested to be the actual event underlying the story of Atlantis' destruction.

The Fall of Troy. Greek vase-painting. Suggested as another origin of the Atlantis story.
