Good and Bad

Here is my selection of good and bad web-pages. The pages are good and bad for a number of reasons, but I will only mention one or two reasons for why I picked each page. Since I have more experience with Norwegian and Scandinavian web-pages, my selection has a Nordic touch to it. I hope you don't mind!!

Danish National Library :
This is the homepage for the Danish National Library (Royal Libray). I like this page because it is simple and you don't have to scroll it. It follows a principle referred to as "The Stone-table Principle". By following this principle, the creator of the page can be sure that all the information that is so important that is has to be on the first page of the site, will actually be seen.

Backpacker's Guide :
This is a page for people that are or are planning to go backpacking. I'm not really into backpacking, I just stumbled upon this page, and I think it a good example of sensible use of frames. In this case the frames actually makes navigation easier! A bad example of the use of frames follows!!

The Obsession of Dance Company :
I love dancing, and I think this page underlines what dancing is about: Elegance (pronounced with a french accent)

The Library at The Norwegian Folk Museum :
This is the page that I designed for my thesis. Of course I think it's a good site! It's a good site for a number of reasons. Here I would like to point out the colors, which are pleasant to look at, and the first letters that support the common thought that museums deal with old "stuff".

The British Library :
I have been watching The British Libraries web-pages, and they have really improved since last fall. The pages used to be almost impossible to navigate. You would get completely lost in the mass of information. Now I think they both look graet and work great. They have used frames to their benefit.

Explorations in HTML :
This is a very good example of how you shouldn't use frames. The page uses 5 frames, and even though the idea of showing examples as you read the text is good, nobody has a screen that makes this look good. The frames are too small, you loose feeling of what they contain.

Library and Information Science Department :
These are the web-pages of The Library and Information Science Department at Oslo College where I spent 3 years. I think their web- pages are difficult to navigate, very confusing for someone who doesen't know the school... The "buttons" in the frame on the right only operate on the small yellow "arrows", you have to concentrate hard to click in the right spot.

The Virtual Library Museums Page :
This page is just very messy, and it is difficult to grasp the information.

Infoseek :
I guess the people that make searchengines should know how to make web-pages, but I think this page has too much of everything. Another weekness is that when you perform a search, you have to scroll to get passed all the advertizing before you can look at your hits. No "Stone-table Principle" here!

VG :
This is a Norwegian newspaper, and of course it has to earn money on adds, but there are too many moving gifs here!
