Napoleon arrives in Moscow on September 14th and the city began to burn on the 15th. When the fire was extinguished, the French waited a month for a Russian surrender that never came. "I beat the Russians every time, but that does not get me anywhere," Napoleon said. (Durant and Durant 1975, p. 706) (See Bibliography).
On October 19 Napoleon and his army leave Moscow, defeated. He leaves behind many wounded and sick in Moscow.
