This project was done for LIS 385T, Information Design, for the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at the University of Texas at Austin. It begins with a look at a modified version of Minard's classic 1869 map, illustrating the movement and strength of Napoleon's Grand Army through Russia during the winter of 1812. I have also included a timeline chart of the major battles and movements of the army. You can obtain more detailed information by clicking on a location on the map or a location in the timeline chart.
Minard created his map in part as a statement of the horror and folly of war. This project is an extension of that theme, as it details some of the physical hardships and horrors that the people involved with this campaign faced. I have provided a limited summary of the troop movements and major battles of the compaign, but the focus of the information contained here is on medical and environmental factors that contributed to the heavy casualties during Napoleon's Russian campaign of 1812. Some of the descriptions included here are quite graphic, and individuals with weak stomachs are reading at their own risk.
I have also included a detailed bibliography of sources used in compiling this project.
