November 28, Napoleon, with about 40,000 troops and thousands of stragglers crossed the Berezina and was attacked by Russians, while his army was split on either side of the river. As the fighting went on, more stragglers and vehicles continued to cross, but the Russians were able to set up guns and fire upon the panic-stricken mob trying to cross. The next day, the bridges were lit on fire, and thousands of stragglers, horses and vehicles were left on the wrong side. In total, Napoleon lost approximately 25,000 troops.
