Mary Stallings is one of Concord labels new artists in a growing collection of jazz oriented vocalists. Her voice is warm and produced with a soft edge around it. She can deliver emotion rich renditions of standards and on her second album is branching into more contemporary songs. Her influences seem to be the ladies profiled in these pages but most notably to this listener is a Carmen McRae touch. Stallings continues the tradition of fine singing with enough swing to stir the soul.
