This pop-jazz singer/songwriter with a broad, melismatic contralto voice broke through in 1975 with her debut album on Shelter, then made several albums for Columbia and Atlantic despite legal and personal difficulties that distracted her from her career. She returned to recording on Elektra in 1989 after an eight-year layoff and was also part of Donald Fagen's New York Rock and Soul Revue. ~ William Ruhlmann
