A soft, polished, yet also striking vocalist and pianist, Meredith D'Ambrosio has issued several nice, unimposing albums for Sunnyside. She's sung standards, provided her own lyrics for John Coltrane's "Giant Steps" and Dave Brubeck's "Strange Meadowlark," and added sparse piano accompaniment. D'Ambrosio's style and sound isn't as quirky as Blossom Dearie, nor as captivating as Mose Allison, but she's succeeded in making music that's undeniably distinctive and individualistic. She's not a powerful, gripping or dynamic singer nor pianist, yet she retains the listener's attention by an inspired combination of the right material and effective presentation. D'Ambrosio has several sessions available on CD. ~ Ron Wynn and Michael G. Nastos
