After drawing attention to herself with comic dancing in the all-Black chorus line of Shuffle Along, Baker became the sensation of Paris during the Jazz Age. Her silvery voice (said to be strong enough in her prime to fill a theater without the use of a microphone), exotic good looks, and energetic manner made her a legend for over a half-century in France, with movies, musicals, revues, and hit records to her credit; however, success eluded her in the U.S. She was still active in a one-woman show (with a dozen costume changes) in 1975 when she died in her sleep after giving 14 well-received performances. ~ Cub Koda
