"The battle of Borodino outside Moscow, on 7 September 1812, was the largest and most significant battle of the Napoleonic Wars. It was the turning point in Napoleon's conquest of the European continent. Although Borodino was technically a French victory, a major portion of the French Grande Armee died of starvation prior to the battle, and most of the Borodino survivors either froze to death or starved on the ghastly retreat back to France during the Russian winter."
