Orsha

The march to Orsha was nothing like the march to Moscow. The same unchallenging slopes had turned into quite challenging obstacles for they had all been coated with a thin sheet of ice. Many carriages and carts were destroyed to save the horses.

French army by this time was closely followed by the Russian army and the Cossacks, so the retreat was more like a run for life that actually killed most of them.

As the French army was slowly leaving the land that was under the control of the Russian Empire, the conditions improved a little since the villages were not burnt. In Orsha the army obtained enough food to feed 40,000 men for two days.
