NBC News

NBC cleverly calls its site NBC HTTV. Their news section is, as it is in ABC, merely called News. The user gets to the news section by clicking on the main menu, which is also in the form of a clickable map. NBC handles its sports news differently than ABC, and puts a separate click on the first page to get to sports information, rather than make the user go to the news pages first. It also arranges the objects on the page differently. While ABC has an assortment of icons that are not arranged in a logical order on the main news page, NBC chooses to divide their information up into distinct categories, so that a user can go to the category they wish without browsing all of the icons. The categories that they provide are:

In the News

NBC News Shows

NBCNews Focus

Inside NBC News

NBC News Intellicast Weather

NBC TV Schedule

Although NBC's information delivery is very different than that of ABC, they do not necessarily do a better job. The two different ways of arranging things merely demonstrate that different types of users need different organizational schemes, and that Web page authors recognize that. The NBC home page is easier for users to classify, but the ABC page shows a small graphic of what the user wants, which is easier for some to understand, along with an explanation of what the link will do.
