In view of the CBS news delivery vehicles inadequacies, the discussion concerning comprehensiveness will only be concerned with ABC and NBC. Both of these networks breadth of information is impressive. However, the most innovative of the two is definitely ABC. ABC does incredibly inventive things with audio recordings. Not only do they provide text documents and graphics to go along with their information, they provide audio segments for each object that is on the page. One example is the show This Week With David Brinkley. Not only does the user get text and graphics from the show, they are given the option to download the entire audio recording of the show, or they can choose sections of the show they would like to hear or download. Another example of the innovative use of audio is the "Inside Washington" section, where the user can actually hear congresspeople talk on topics they are interested in over the Internet. This use of Internet technology, along with the traditional text and video, is very impressive. The fact that ABC allows the user to download the audio player directly from their news page as soon as they get there, shows that ABC is doing a great job disseminating their information, and is definitely the most innovative news presence among the big three networks.
NBC also maintains a positive news presence on the Internet by providing strong coverage in areas where the ABC network is weak. This is illustrated by the massive amount of information that they have indexed on their pages. The way they handle their news information, as previously noted, is in categories. The category "In the News" provides all of the major news stories for three days, clickable from the news main page. Once a user has clicked to the day (or weekend-they are handled together) in which they are interested, they are presented with an abstract and a graphic for each story, clickable to the entire story. This is helpful for those who know that they are looking for stories on a specific topic, but are unsure where to look when provided only with the sometimes cryptic titles. The abstract and the picture pique the users interest, and entices them to read the stories because they are so well highlighted.
The contrast between the two sites is interesting. While ABC provides up-to-the hour information on international and domestic news, NBC provides much more in-depth information on the news topics themselves. The sites highlight each other's weaknesses, as well as showcase each other's strengths. CBS does a below-level job at competing with these two networks, their information is sparse and the timeliness is very unclear.
The number of links in the NBC network is by far the greatest. Since the pages change everyday, it is impossible to keep a count, but well over one hundred internal links are maintained at any one time. ABC maintains about half of that number. CBS has one main news link and several other links to topics of interest in the computer field. None of the networks maintain any external links.
